Local leader is ready to make a difference for credit union members across Canada

LANGLEY, B.C. —(April 11, 2018)- Shelley Besse, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at First West Credit Union, has been elected to the Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA) Board of Directors on a three-year term.

The CCUA is the national trade association of Canada’s credit unions and caisses populaires. The CCUA supports 274 credit unions nationally that provide banking services to more than 5.6 million Canadians. The results of the board of directors election completed on March 28 and Langley-based Besse will begin her board tenure at the CCUA annual general meeting on April 30.

“The credit union system has played such an important role in my life and I’m honoured to be elected to the CCUA board.” says Besse. “CCUA is the voice of the credit union system in Canada, and I’m looking forward to working with other credit union leaders to ensure all of our members are represented at a national level.”

As First West’s COO, Shelley Besse is responsible for leading regional operations for all of First West’s regional brands: Envision Financial, Valley First, Enderby & District Financial and Island Savings. Shelley brings more than 30 years of credit union experience to her new role on the CCUA board.

The CCUA Board consists of 16 directors in total (11 directors elected by credit unions and five directors appointed by regional Centrals), bringing together credit union leaders from every region of Canada, and representing credit unions of all sizes.
